Story Telling Sunday March

Why do some people have all the luck???

Have you ever been a winner? Have you ever known someone personally that has won the lottery or won something else amazing?? Actually I have!

Many years ago when I was in my early teens, the biggest supermarket ever in the UK was built nearby. When it first opened there were loads of promotions and in store competitions. The main object of everyone's desire was a car, a brand new mini and many people entered multiple times, repeatedly writing their details on paper and posting them in the contest box.

There was a grand presentation of the car and a celebrity to present the keys. The winner had posted one entry only. The family that won were due to go on their annual camping holiday, so arrived with their ancient estate car full of equipment. The press were there and took fake photos, they made the dad stoop as he was taller than the celebrity. They reported the story incorrectly, the wrong model of car, the wrong colour and quoted the mother inaccurately.

Kenneth Williams was the celebrity ( hands up who remembers him from all those fabulous Carry On films???). He was fantastic with the family putting them at ease prior to the presentation and telling them funny stories. He asked if they had packed everything and said once he travelled abroad and had forgotten his socks, he sent his aide to buy some from a local marketplace, he wore the socks in the heat and the dye came out and he had dark blue feet for the rest of his trip..... a very funny man! He has sadly passed away now but he did write 'the Kenneth Williams Diaries' but his day out at an Essex supermarket did not feature!!

Todays true story was brought to you by Sian's Story Telling Sunday check her blog for many more terrific tales. Come back next month as I think there may be another 'winning' story.

  2. "Oooooo, Matron!" Thats the kinda celeb I like, one who'll chat to people & put them at ease ... many celebs forget to do this these days.

  5. What fun to meet Kenneth Williams and hear about his blue-sock feet!
Wasn't it rather a squash, going away in a mini - or did you take the estate car and leave the mini at home?
I've never won such a big prize, but I was lucky enough to win a year's free shopping deliveries, from Ocado. We saved up the money we'd have spent on our weekly groceries that year - it made a nice start to the "pot" for our new bedroom extension!
I do have hopes of winning a big sum on the Lottery - how fun would that be? So far, we've had one lot of 4 numbers (about £36 I think!) and numerous £10 prizes. DH says he thinks they should just give us our millions at once and be done with it, instead of £10 installments!

Great story - it was fun!

  8. Oooh how lovely - my hand is up as I thought KW was great fun! My cousin won a pink cadillac once ... not as great as it sounds as he didn't want it and only sold it for a fraction of what it was "worth"!

  10. Great story - and a bit of name-dropping too. I won a tiny B/W portable telly in a pub raffle in my first year at college. Actually a fab prize, as I couldn't afford a television for my students digs. And you've just given me an idea for April's Storytelling Sunday - thanks for that

  19. A great story - especially the blue feet. What I am wondering is did the family dump their estate and try and cram everthing into the mini!!
